<image:title>Blog - God's Majesty - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Scripture: Psalm 121:1-2 (NIV) "I lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth." Mountains often symbolize places of encounter with the Divine. Moses ascended Mount Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments, and Jesus often sought solitude and communion with His Father on mountaintops. Similarly, the mountains can serve as a sanctuary where we draw closer to God, experiencing His grandeur and finding solace in His embrace. As we observe the photograph, the valley nestled between the mountains represent the seasons of struggle, uncertainty, and pain that we inevitably face. Yet, in these moments, we can find hope and reassurance in the words of the psalmist. In times of difficulty, we often seek solutions or strength solely within ourselves or from the world around us. However, the psalmist's answer remains resolute: "My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth." In the midst of life's valleys, we have the assurance that our help comes from the Lord—the One who formed the very mountains we behold. He is the source of our strength, our comfort, and our ultimate refuge. When the journey through the valleys seems overwhelming, we can lift our eyes and find solace in the presence of our loving Heavenly Father. May we find encouragement to lift our eyes to the Maker of heaven and earth, knowing that our help comes from Him alone. In His presence, we discover peace, strength, and an unwavering hope that sustains us through every mountain and valley of life. (Written with the help of an AI tool).</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - I Found Him-Thanksgiving 2021 - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>We enter another season of Thanksgiving, overeating with family and friends, feasting on turkey and all the fixings. It is also a time that we give thanks. Giving thanks is not reserved only for Thanksgiving Day, however. The Bible teaches us to live a life of thanksgiving. Paul writes in Colossians 3:15 (NIV) “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful”. It is a way of life! It is an Attitude of Gratitude. Hebrews 12:28 (NIV) states: “Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe”. Again—an ATTITUDE of Gratitude. Paul states in Colossians 2:7 (NIV) “…continue to live your lives in Him, rooted and built up in Him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness”. “Overflowing” does not imply one-day only, it implies every day, every hour, every minute. So, as we celebrate Thanksgiving this year, grateful that we are once again able to gather with family and friends, let us rededicate ourselves to a new level of thankfulness. One that exists not only for one day in November, but every day. Let gratitude define who we are and how we act. Let our new Attitude of Gratitude shine brightly on all that we encounter, every day. I Found Him in a field of wild turkeys.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - I Found Him-Spiral Tree</image:title>
<image:caption>A tree apparently was wrapped in some aggressive vines early on that relentlessly tightened its grip onto the trunk as the tree grew. The tree’s resilience and adaptability showed as it continues to grow, it persevered despite an obstacle literally choking it. As is often the case, nature provides great lessons for us in our lives. Paul writes in Romans 5:3-4 (NIV): “…we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character hope”. Just as this tree amazes me with its perseverance, so do so many people who suffer. Many people are suffering today; some with illnesses, some with a loss of a job, others with depression or mourning, and others know that they are living the last chapter in their earthly lives. Yet whatever their circumstances, those that have an unwavering love for and belief in Jesus as our Lord and Savior, exhibits the perseverance, character, and hope that is inspiring. They follow the example that Jesus set for us on the cross: endure, press on, persevere! The Bible has numerous references to those who suffer and yet keep the faith and are rewarded. James 1:2-3 (NIV) for example says: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance”. Just as this tree never gave up, neither should we. Trust God! I Found Him…with a tree that would not give in.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - I Found Him-Sweetgum Ball</image:title>
<image:caption>A sweetgum ball hangs precariously from a branch in the woods as if it is “hanging on by a thread”. Any rain, or wind, or squirrel running along the branch will knock it down. There are many people today who feel as if they are “hanging by a thread”. In times of despair and hopelessness, when I am “hanging from a thread” and simply cannot take even one more problem; not one more task, not another setback, not more bad news, nothing--I am often drawn to Psalm 34 (NIV). Verse 4: “I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from my fears”. Verse 17-19: “The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; He delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. The righteous person may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all”. 2020 has been a particularly stressful year. For many it is a time to question God, question His existence, ask “why Lord?”, and to turn away from Him. This only tightens the downward spiral. What these times truly call for is praise to God, FAITH, and leaning on His broad shoulders. On our own, tough times get tougher. With God, we can and will endure. Emmanuel, God is with us! I Found Him…as a sweetgum ball inexplicitly hangs on to a branch.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - I Found Him-Southport Pier</image:title>
<image:caption>Lights illuminate a fishing pier in the predawn hours giving fishermen a clear path to their fishing destination. It reveals to them any obstacles in the way, allowing for a safe walk on the pier. When Jesus walked on Earth, He proclaimed that He was indeed the “light of the world” (John 8:12 NIV) and that “Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life”. He said this as an indirect way of informing them that He was deity. John explains in John 3:19-21 (NIV) “ …Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed”. , John writes in 1 John 1:5 “…God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all”. Light represents what is good, true, and holy and darkness represents what is evil. Our challenge is to walk in the light where we can see and not fall over devil-set traps in darkness. Just as the lights on this pier show us the way, Jesus is our light 24/7. He shines the light of love and kindness on our path. Avoid the dark trails where the devil lurks and follow the brightly lit one, praising God every step of the way. I Found Him…walking on a coastal fishing pier, guided by the brightly shining lights.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - I Found Him...Shrimp Graders</image:title>
<image:caption>I had the honor of meeting some hard-working people as they graded shrimp fresh off a trawler. They stand on a concrete floor and separate shrimp by size for hours. I left that place smiling due to these amazing people, laughing and accepting a stranger with a camera. In reminiscing this uplifting day, I am reminded of the scripture from Ecclesiastes 5:18 & 20 (NIV): “This is what I have observed to be good: that it is appropriate for a person to eat, to drink and to find satisfaction in their toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life God has given them—for this is their lot. …They seldom reflect on the days of their life, because God keeps them occupied with gladness of heart.” Many folks are struggling: health challenges, work issues, relationship problems, depression, addiction, hunger, and more. Take comfort-- there is an answer. There is hope. It boils down to attitude. Do we decide to wallow in our miseries or to have a happy heart? Help awaits those who ask—God Almighty. Know that peace and joy is yours when you truly accept Jesus. The lyrics from A. Walker’s old hymn seem appropriate: “Sometimes, though my way, it gets so dreary, dark and cold…But I can just go to God in prayer. I know, I can find Him there to whisper hey, hey ,hey, hey sweet peace my soul”. I Found Him…with smiling faces in a shrimp processing facility.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - I Found Him--Bullfrog</image:title>
<image:caption>Jeremiah was a bullfrog Was a good friend of mine… Singin' joy to the world All the boys and girls now Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea Joy to you and me Although the whimsical lyrics to this 1970’s hit by the Three Dog Night were probably only meant to be fun and even a little silly, they may indeed have real meaning for us. One interpretation is that the bullfrog represents the prophet Jeremiah from the Bible, and that the song represents God's desire to unite all people in happiness. This may be a stretch, but the song still can give us hope in these troubling times. How? Acts 16 describes how the jailer of Paul and Silas became suicidal when he thought that they had escaped. Paul and Silas did not escape, however, but instead “spoke the word of the Lord to him” (the jailer). Acts 16:34 sums up the story: “The jailer brought them into the house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God…”. He was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God. Jesus says it this way as recorded in John 15:10-11: “If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love…I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete”. Joy to the World! I Found Him…with a bullfrog in a ditch.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Foggy Mountain Reflection</image:title>
<image:caption>It was wonderful to feel the presence of God while looking up at the magical sight of the Beech Mountain ski resort with the morning fog lingering at the top. On this crisp September morning, for a few precious moments, the world seemed clean. There was no corona virus, no divisiveness, no hate, no pain. All was well with the world as I breathed in deeply the fresh mountain air. Jesus’ words from Matthew 26:64, when asked if He was indeed the Son of God seem apropos for this moment. Jesus said: “But I say to all of you; From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven”. The words from Mark 13:26 also are appropriate when enjoying this fog-filled mountain top. Speaking of the end of times, Mark writes: “At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory”. Soon the fog burned away, a new day began, and the realities of our world set in. I think of two good friends who have recently died from Covid. I mourn; I question; and I listen for God’s soothing reassurance. Paul’ words help from 1 Thessalonians 3:17-18 when he said that believers “will be caught up together…in the clouds to meet the Lord…Therefore, encourage one another with these words”. I Found Him on a gorgeous, foggy morning on Beech Mountain.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - I Found Him-Clematis</image:title>
<image:caption>Sometimes what one hears or even sees is simply not believable, but it is true. From this close-up image alone, for example, it is difficult to imagine that it is from a Clematis vine; a vine that has a dense mat of leaves that is ideal on trellises, fences, and walls. We may doubt this truth until we can see the entire vine. “Doubting Thomas” initially did not believe that Jesus had risen from the dead when he heard it from other disciples. It’s regrettable that this nickname stuck because who would not have doubted this story? John 20:27-29 (NIV) describes what happened when Thomas did indeed see Jesus: “Then He said to Thomas, ‘put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe’. Thomas said to Him, ‘My Lord and my God’. Then Jesus told him, ‘Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed’”. None of us have seen Jesus and if honest, most have doubts. Are we “Doubting Thomas’s” or are we willing to accept the account of those who did see Jesus? Jesus said, “blessed are those who have not seen and yet believed”. Although this image does not look like a Clematis, it is. And even though we did not physically see Jesus rise from the dead, He did! I Found Him…in the extreme close-up view of a beautiful flowering vine.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A breathtaking sea of color abounds at this Eastern NC flower farm filled with gorgeous tulips. As beautiful as they are, though, we know that soon the flowers with wither away. Biblical analogies of flowers falling from their stems as seasons change teaches that change does occur, but one truth remains steadfast—God’s love for us. 1 Peter 1:22-25 states; “Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart. For you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. For ‘All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers in the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures forever’”. We live in unbelievably uncertain times. Covid 19 continues to spread, most are under “Stay at Home” orders, and life as we knew it no longer exists. Material possessions that we once thought were so important seem less so now. Relationships matter more. Take comfort in knowing that God’s love endures. Pray that when this virus is contained that we will emerge stronger in our love for God and in our love for each other. Pray that old wounds heal, divides come together, and that a revival in our hearts will spread throughout the world faster than any virus. I Found Him in a spectacular field of tulips.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A Bald Eagle majestically perches on the branch of a pine tree on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. He seems to exude strength, confidence, and power. We face unprecedented times as we battle COVID-19. Virtually all sporting events are cancelled, schools, offices and churches are closing trying to curb the spread of this highly contagious disease. “Social Distancing” is now a thing. Hand sanitizers are simply nowhere to be found and people are inexplicably stock-piling toilet paper. The stock market is dropping at an historic pace causing retirees who depend on their 401K’s much stress and anxiety. If there is a silver-lining in this global emergency, it is that it gives us time to pause, to reevaluate priorities, to examine our souls. We can find comfort in the Bible. Isaiah 40:31 says: “but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength! They will soar on wings like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint”. My prayer is that common sense will prevail, that we will avoid close contact with people, wash our hands often, and certainly not go out if symptoms appear. I also pray that employers will sustain affected employees. Be comforted by Isaiah’s words in Isaiah 41:10 “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you…” I Found Him…while observing an eagle perched in a pine tree.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - I Found Him-Forest</image:title>
<image:caption>I never tire of witnessing the awe-inspiring beauty of God’s creation. The God-painted colors in this Vermont forest are truly breathtaking. With this pure beauty in mind, it truly saddens me to think of the wildfires ravaging thousands of acres on the west coast. Not only are the forests devastated, but the human and wildlife toll is immeasurable. These horrific fires start many times by a single spark. Similarly, for us, often-times a small action has huge consequences. James, Jesus’ brother, writes in James 3:5-7 (NIV): “Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue is also a fire…It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell… (The tongue) is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.” Flip Wilson‘s famous words “the devil made me do it” apply here. The devil, working on us, causes us to say things that we regret; hurtful things. James continues in verse 10: “Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing, My brothers, this should not be”. Ill-spoken words, spontaneous words of anger, have long-lasting negative effects on relationships, families, friendships, and even countries. Fight the devil; slow down, breathe deeply, and think before speaking. Avoid the figurative spark that can burn an entire forest. I Found Him…on a beautiful fall day in Vermont.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - I Found Him-Dairy Farm</image:title>
<image:caption>Signs of a changing season abound on this beautiful Vermont dairy farm. The changing colors of the leaves signify that fall is here and that winter is not far behind. The beauty of this season is bittersweet in that we know that a cold, harsh New England winter surely will follow. We have faith, however, that spring will come again; that the snow and ice will melt, and that once again, new growth and mild temperatures will replace the cold, dark season of winter. What a great lesson God teaches those who simply contemplate the changing seasons. As the popular verse in Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NIV) proclaims, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven”. Indeed, we all go through different seasons in our lives, we weep and we laugh, we mourn and we dance, we scatter stones and we gather them, we are silent and we speak, we love and we hate. Through it all, believers we have FAITH. We believe that new growth will emerge, that our faith will mature. Paul teaches in Ephesians 3:12 (NIV) “In Him and through faith in Him we may approach God with freedom and confidence”. Wow! Let us all learn and take comfort that through faith, regardless of the season that we find ourselves, that we can approach God with freedom and confidence. We know that in God’s infinite wisdom, a new season awaits. I Found Him…in beautiful Vermont.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Margaretsville Lighthouse, built in 1859, still operates today along the coast of Nova Scotia. Its original oil lamp was replaced after over 100 years by an electrical one in 1963. This lighthouse, along with thousands of others throughout the world, offers a great service to ships sailing through treacherous waters; shining light on dangerous paths. We too have a light that shines when we stray onto dangerous, sinful waters -a conscience. God gave us this “warning light” to help us follow Him. Even if the conscience is dulled and darkened by sin, it still shines, nudging us back to a Godlier path. God’s light shines, guiding us away from the dark, sinful paths. Proverb 20:27 (The Living Bible”) says: “A man’s conscience is the Lord’s searchlight exposing his hidden motives”. In other words, a conscience is God’s way of keeping us focused and centered as we navigate a perilous world. In 1 Timothy 1:19 (The Living Bible) Paul instructs Timothy (and us) to “Cling tightly to your faith in Christ and always keep your conscience clear, doing what you know is right. For some people have disobeyed their consciences and have deliberately done what they know is wrong. It isn’t surprising that they lost their faith in Christ after defying God like that”. Follow the light of Christ as it is emitted by your conscience and allow the love of God to shine in you. I Found Him…as a lighthouse boldly guards a Nova Scotian coastline.</image:caption>

<image:caption>What a joy it is to step away from the details of day to day life and look at the world from a different perspective. Breathing the cool air along the Cabot Trail in Nova Scotia, viewing this beautiful vista, allowed me to put aside my problems, burdens, and concerns and simply enjoy the moment. God intends for us to change our perspective, to look to Him rather than ourselves. Daily routines, to-do lists, and schedules often dominate us. Look at the world from a different view and realize that God sees the big picture. When we are depressed or angry, look to Him When we are overwhelmed by life’s minutia, look to Him. When we face new challenges, look to Him. When we are tempted, look to Him By changing our perspective and focusing on the big picture-everlasting life through Jesus Christ-joy emerges; and joy will overwhelm our earthly issues. Paul says in Colossians 3:2 (NIV) “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” Look at the world as if you were on the top of a mountain as in this picture. Look to God, change the perspective, consider the big picture. Take comfort from the words in Psalms 138:7 (NIV) “Though I walk in the mist of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out Your hand against the anger of my foes, with Your right hand You save me”. <image:title>Blog - I Found Him-Appalachian Trail</image:title>
<image:caption>The Appalachian Trail is a 2,200+/- mile marked hiking trail that extends between Georgia and Maine. It is considered the longest hiking-only trail in the world with an estimated 2 million+ people hiking on part of the trail at least once each year. Although I only hiked a very short distance, many hike the entire 2,200 miles continuously (“Thru-Hikers”) in one season. Others, when completing the entire hike, turn around and thru-hike the trail the other way, known as a "yo-yo". To complete this hike in any manner takes great perseverance, discipline, and self-control. These same traits are required to be a follower of Jesus. Hebrews 12:1-2 sets a very clear vision: “…let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus…”. Just as the hikers enjoy the journey but have their eyes set on the completion point of their hike, so should we enjoy every day without letting our eyes stray from our finish line—Jesus! We, like the hikers, face obstacles along the way, we grow weary, we often have doubts and consider taking the easy path. Resist that temptation. Hebrews 12:3 (NIV) offers encouragement: “Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart”. With Jesus’ help we can persevere. Keep your eyes on Jesus! I Found Him…along the Appalachian Trail.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - I Found Him...Wind Swept Trees</image:title>
<image:caption>Trees along the North Carolina coast have withstood hurricanes, nor’easters, thunderstorms and strong winds for years. They bend, adapt, and bounce back after virtually every storm. Faith is very similar. We all face trails, rough spots, and events that test our faith. It is those with deep roots who weather these storms and bounce back. James, the brother and disciple of Jesus, explains in James 1:2-4 (NIV) how to face the trials that we face: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trails of many kinds, because that you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything”. Just as these trees have deep, well established roots, we too must rely on our roots of faith and develop perseverance. James continues in verses 6 & 12 “But he who asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave in the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God had promised to those who love him”. Although not easy, embrace life’s storms, keep your faith, and grow perseverance. God promises that we will emerge stronger. Although we sway, we bounce back and continue to grow—through faith. I Found Him…Among the swaying coastal trees.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Another day ends as the sun majestically sets behind the mountains at the Skyline Drive in Virginia. Watching the sun slowly creep behind the mountain surrounded by vibrant yellows and oranges certainly is an awe inspiring experience. The day ends and we rest with hope and anticipation of a new day coming. Many carry burdens and struggles and long for a new start tomorrow; one with assurance, peace and hope. Jesus said in Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV) “Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light”. This gorgeous sunset represents a new opportunity for believers. The issues, heartaches, concerns, and troubles burn away with the descending sun. As the psalmist in Psalm 46:1 (NIV) says: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble”. So many people try to handle this complex life on their own without God. But they struggle. Those who follow Jesus’ command of “Come to me” have a much better chance. Joy, peace and comfort awaits. So lean on Jesus; allow Him to carry your load. As the sun sets tonight, let your troubles go with the sun and know that through Jesus, tomorrow WILL be better. <image:title>Blog - I Found Him...Dandelion Flower</image:title>
<image:caption>Dandelions and their flowers are a nuisance that litters our yards in the spring. Up close, however, its bright yellow petals are quite pretty. Their beauty lasts only a short time before they wither away, however. They come and go and are forgotten. The Bible uses the analogy of flowers withering to describe people and our priorities. Peter describes what it is like to accept Jesus, to trust Him, and put our faith and trust in Him alone. In 1 Peter 1:23-24 (Living Bible) he says “For you have a new life. It is not passed on to you from your parents, for the life they gave you will fade away. This new one will last forever, for it comes from Christ, God’s ever-living Message to men. Yes, our natural lives will fade as grass does when it becomes all brown and dry. All our greatness is like a flower that droops and falls; but the Word of the Lord will last forever…” This does not imply being unambitious or not striving to excel. The issue arises when people put those goals ahead of God’s. Serving God and living our lives according to His will is our first priority. 1 Peter 2:2 (Living Bible) “Now that you realize how kind the Lord has been to you, put away all evil, deception, envy, and fraud. Long to grow up into the fullness of your salvation…” I Found Him…watching a wild dandelion flower quickly bloom and wither away.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - I Found Him...Rope</image:title>
<image:caption>A rope consists of many smaller strands of fiber, when woven together, are much stronger than any one strand by itself. And a knot becomes even stronger as the two ends are pulled apart, the knot grows tighter. People of God are undoubtedly the same. As Paul said in 1 Corinthians 12:14 (NIV) “For the body is not made up of one part, but many.” The body of Christ is not one person, but all of us, working together toward the same goal. We are much stronger, when we work together in unity. Harmony depends on teamwork; and harmony is required to do God's will. As others try to pull us apart, let’s grow even tighter, focused together on God’s work. Paul instructed the Corinthians in 1 Corinthians 1:10 (NIV) “I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there will be no divisions among you and that you will be perfectly united in mind and thought." The divisiveness in our world, country, churches and families is indeed making us weak. It’s time that we join together as one, all pulling together, to accomplish the work that God has laid out for us. Together, we can! Single strands of fiber are weak, but woven together into a rope, is virtually unbreakable. So it is with us! I Found Him…studying the small individual strands that make the rope so formidable.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - I Found Him...Fish House</image:title>
<image:caption>An old fish house stands vacant-once the site where thousands of pounds of river herring were processed each year. At its peak, over 13 million pounds of herring were harvested in North Carolina as they migrated inland from the ocean, making it one of the largest fresh water fisheries in the world. The herring population dropped dramatically in the late 1980’s due to over-fishing, habitat loss, and water quality degradation. As a result, it is now illegal to fish herrings in NC waters. This represents another example of how man succumbs to greed and temptation. The fish were so abundant that the temptation of quick profits outweighed the long-term effects of over-fishing. A generation of herring fishermen no longer can fish them. Temptations plague us all. James said in James 1:13-14 (NIV) “When tempted, no one should say ‘God is tempting me’. For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed.” Temptations start with a thought, then desire and greed. The place to stop temptation is at the first thought. Know that God wants us to overcome the devil’s desires and will help. Lean on God’s strength to resist temptation, pray for His help, His guidance and will power. Stand firm in doing what is right; not what may bring us short-term pleasure or greedy rewards. <image:title>Blog - I Found Him-Great Egret Reflection</image:title>
<image:caption>The majestically still marsh water reflects almost perfectly the image of a Great Egret as it slowly and meticulously looks for fish. The reflection is not real; it is only an image. If one tried to grab it, they would retrieve nothing but a handful of water. It is not what is appears. We all have met people who try to project an image of themselves that is truly not who they are. External appearances do not always show what is in ones’ heart. Proverbs 27:19 (NIV) says it well: “As water reflects a face, so a man’s heart reflects the man”. What are our hearts reflecting? Jesus warns us in Matthew 6:19-24 (NIV) that our hearts should not be set on worldly treasures, but instead on heavenly treasures. Verse 21 states: “For where your treasure is, your heart will be also”. He summarizes His point in verse 24: “You cannot serve both God and money”. What are our hearts reflecting? Think about Paul’s words in Galatians 2:6 “As for those who seemed to be important—whatever they were makes no difference to me; God does not judge by external appearance…”. What are our hearts reflecting? Faith is not about “smoke and mirrors”. Faith is not about an image that one projects. Faith is about what is in our hearts. Let your reflection be one of the Lord in your heart! I Found Him…watching a beautiful Great Egret wade through the still waters.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Barnacles</image:title>
<image:caption>To many, this picture is not interesting because it is not readily apparent what it is. It is not realistic. Others see that it is dried barnacles on a decaying tree limb and at least understand what it is. Yet others see the textures, shapes, patterns and actually perceive it as art. As is often said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Faith follows a similar pattern. Some incredulously read of a virgin birth and of a sinless man rising from the dead and think “impossible”. Others believe wholeheartedly that this is indeed the truth. Although not logical, real. It all depends on how one views life itself. Jesus eluded to this when quoting Isaiah in Matthew 13:14-15 (NIV) “You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving. For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes…”. He continued teaching the disciples in verses 15-16 “But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear. …many righteous men longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear and do not hear it”. It boils down to faith. Can you see what is not visible, hear what is not audible, believe the unbelievable? Believers see more in life than is superficially apparent. They see the art. I Found Him…in dried barnacles on a piece of driftwood.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Any guesses as to what this picture is? … It is an extreme close up shot of Spanish moss. This image reminds me of my life at times-a tangled mess. It also reminds me of churches and their apparent lack of direction. Imagine several people on a row boat in the middle of the river. They all are rowing very hard, but in different directions. Where might the boat go? Its path may look similar to the moss. Now imagine that these same people chose a water tower on the distant shore and all rowed toward it, not working any harder; just now aligned and rowing toward a specific point. So what is the “water tower” in our lives and in the church? Jesus answered this in Matthew 28:19 (NIV) “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…”. Make disciples! Many churches have drifted away from this basic command. They look like this Spanish moss; tangled, disorganized, and unfocused. In John 14:5-6 (NIV) Thomas asked Jesus a question that maybe we should be asking our church leaders “Lord, we don’t know where you are going. So how can we know the way? Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life…’”. Jesus is our water tower. Untangle your lives, row toward the water tower, JESUS! <image:title>Blog - I Found Him...Oregon Inlet Bridge</image:title>
<image:caption>The 2.4 mile Herbert C. Bonner Bridge, which carries N.C. 12 over Oregon Inlet between Hatteras and Bodie Islands at the NC Outer Banks has long out-lived its designed life span and is being replaced with one that will better withstand its coastal environment. It struck me as I watched the bridge construction, that it was being built from each shore and meeting in the middle. How exact the measurements must be with virtually no tolerance for deviation from the highly engineered plans. There can be no compromising from the plans. Being off only a small inch near the shore would create a huge variance near the center. We too are faced with opportunities to compromise our Christian beliefs every day. It is certainly easy for us to be “off only an inch”. These small compromises often lead to bigger gaps between us and God. Paul encourages us in Philippians 4:13 (Living Bible) “for I can do everything that God asks with the help of Christ who gives me the strength and power”. It is our responsibility to live lives as Jesus desires for us. To do so we must make up our minds how we will live every day. With Christ as our strength and as our blueprint, we can say no to even small compromises, guaranteeing that there will be no gap between us and the Lord when our “bridge” is completed. I Found Him…in the gap of a beautiful new Oregon Inlet bridge.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - I Found Him...Hood Ornament</image:title>
<image:caption>Remember when cars had ornate hood ornaments that really served no functional purpose other than a status symbol? This is one from a Pontiac that currently resides in an old car junkyard. There are many “Christians” who strive to be seen, but actually serve the Kingdom of God no more than hood ornaments serve cars. These hypocrites do irreparable harm to the cause of Christianity in that people see their ACTIONS and want no part of churches or religion, thinking that these represent all Christians. Paul addresses this in Titus 1:16 (NIV) “They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny Him. They are detestable, disobedient, and unfit for doing anything good”. John reinforces this in John 2:4&6 (NIV) “The man who says ‘I know Him but does not do what He commands is a liar’…Whoever claims to live in Him must walk as Jesus did”. The message seems clear. True Christians are not flashy nor do they try to be seen doing good deeds. It is about what is in our hearts, striving to be like Jesus, and pushing forward with humility and sincerity. Isaiah 29:13 “…These people come to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me”. People of God, be more than a hood ornament, love God with your hearts and serve Him out of love, not for show. Thrive to be like Jesus. <image:title>Blog - I Found Him...Fog</image:title>
<image:caption>An eerie fog crept over the creek rendering it virtually unpassable. Boaters simply could not see through the fog to navigate their boats. Buoys, landmarks, and other means of determining a direction were not visible. Potential dangers and obstacles, posing significant risks lurked in the fog. I suspect that many of us find ourselves stuck in the “fog” from time to time. We cannot see a direction for our lives or understand God’s plan for us. We cannot see obstacles that the devil presents. We are lost! The Bible has many references to such a state. Luke 15:24 (NIV), for example, referring to the parable of the lost son, says “For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and found…”. Just as it is dangerous to navigate a boat in the heavy fog, it is also dangerous navigating our lives without direction. What a comfort it is to know that “The Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost”. Luke 19:10 (NIV). Just as God eventually lifted the fog from the creek, so can He lift us out of our personal “fogs”. The prophet Isaiah says it well in Isaiah 48:17 (NIV) “I am the Lord your God…who directs you in the way you should go”. When you find yourself lost, without direction, in a “fog”; look to the Lord for direction. He is waiting for you! I Found Him…in a dreary fog over the creek.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - I Found Him-Sunrise at OBX</image:title>
<image:caption>A beautiful sunrise at the North Carolina Outer Banks offers new opportunities, new adventures, second chances, and the excitement for another day. Here it seems to hide behind a strand of sea oats All of us at times allow “sea oats” to grow in our lives, blocking the opportunities that God provides to those who focus on him. Paul explains in Titus 3:3-4 (NIV) “At one time we were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, He saved us…”. We oftentimes get hung up in the weeds in our hectic lives and fail to slow down long enough to realize what God is indeed offering to those who put God first. There is a beautiful sunrise for those who step out of the weeds and look. John assures us in 1 John 5:3-4 (NIV) “This is love for God: to obey His commands. And His commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world…” Certainly John is not saying that our burdens are light, but that the Holy Spirit dwells in believers and gives them strength. Put your trust in God; submit to Him in everything, remove the weeds. A beautiful new day awaits. I Found Him…during a spectacular sunrise at the Outer Banks.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Cotton Boll</image:title>
<image:caption>Raw cotton undergoes an amazing transformation process. The cotton bolls (outer casing) and seeds are removed at a cotton gin; fibers are then combed to remove impurities; followed by “pulling” it into thin strands and “spun” into yarn. Finally, the cotton is woven into a fabric which will eventually be apparel, bedding, rope, and others. We too can be transformed if we allow God to take control of the process. Paul says in Philippians 3:21 (NIV) “who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under His control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like His glorious body”. Many people believe that they can handle life on their own, that they do not need God, they do not see a need to be transformed. These people simply conform to society and struggle to find meaning and purpose in their lives. They simply do not understand the power of the love of Christ. Paul instructs us, however, in Romans 12:2 (NIV): “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of the world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…”. So just as raw cotton is not very useful until processed; we too need “processing”. Allow God into your lives; allow Him to transform you so that you too may enjoy the peace, comfort, and joy of living a life based on faith. The end product is indeed beautiful. I Found Him…in a cotton field ready for harvesting.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - I Found Him...Deteriorating House</image:title>
<image:caption>A once beautiful house deteriorates due to a lack of routine maintenance. Left unprotected, the house simply cannot withstand the beatings that it takes from rain, wind, sunlight and other forces. Unless something is done, it will fall into a state whereby it cannot be recovered. It needs to be revived! Is this not like many of us who are static in our faith? A “walk” with Jesus implies constant movement. We too need “maintenance” to keep from deteriorating spiritually. Church attendance, Bible study, participation in Christian small groups, seeking out and helping those in need, prayer, and striving to live like Jesus provide maintenance to our lives. John says in 2 John 4 (NIV) “It has given me great joy to find some of you walking in the truth, just as the Father has commanded us”. The action word “walking” implies that we need to continuously move, grow, and strive to be Christ-like. Being revived often ensures that the devil does not eat away at our defenses. As we seek to obey God, we are revived. Psalms 19:7 (NIV) assures us: “The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving our soul”. By praying the prayer written in Psalms 85:6 “Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you”; we set our minds to moving toward Him. Never static, but constantly striving to grow closer to God revives us daily. I Found Him…in a beautiful, but abandoned and deteriorating house.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - I Found Him...Squirrel Jumping</image:title>
<image:caption>I stood early one morning in a field in the NC mountains where elk had been known to feed hoping to photograph one. While I waited on this wonderfully cool August morning, I saw a wild turkey in the tall grass, a bee feverishly working on abundant wild flowers, and a couple of playful squirrels running back and forth on an old fence. Yet I stood there frustrated because I had not seen an elk. What a wasted morning, I thought. It finally hit me that I was missing great opportunities because I was too focused on photographing an elk. I really should have embraced the moment. God wants us to not just live, but to live life fully with joy every day. Jesus says in John 10:10 (NIV) “…I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full”. Many are so focused on the daily chores of life that they do not see or experience the beautiful joys that God presents along the way. We are too busy; always waiting for “an elk”, our vacation, the next holiday, retirement, or whatever to enjoy life. God wants us to appreciate, love, and embrace the journey. The Bible says in Proverbs 17:22 that “a happy heart is good medicine ….” So slow down, breathe deeply, laugh, love, and serve God by appreciating each day; embracing each blessing received from God. <image:title>Blog - I Found Him-Clary Sage</image:title>
<image:caption>Travelers through northeastern North Carolina are amazed to see beautiful tall spears of lavender and white flowers filling the rural landscape. The oil from this unusual crop, clary sage, allows perfume, cologne and other fragrances to last longer. Except for this one corner in northeastern North Carolina, clary sage is grown only in France and China. Since it is used for perfume, my preconceived idea of its fragrance was shattered when I broke off a flower and smelled it. In addition to being almost repulsive, I could not get the aroma off of my hands. It was not what I expected at all! Jesus warns us many times that some people are not what they appear. In Matthew 7:15 (NIV) for example, Jesus says to “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves”. And in 2 Peter 2:1, Simon Peter says “But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you…”. David described our challenge in his prayer in Psalms 26:4-5: “I do not sit with deceitful men, nor do I consort with hypocrites. I abhor the assembly of evildoers and refuse to sit with the wicked”. Be careful, things are not always as they appear. Trust that God will help you see through hypocrisy and lead you to a life that is truly God centered. <image:title>Blog - I Found Him-Old Deserted Car</image:title>
<image:caption>An old car sits, static, no longer moving forward, no longer moving at all. So weeds start to grow in and around it and eventually even trees, rendering this car dead for evermore. We too need to keep moving; moving in our faith journey. As we stop attending church, stop Bible studies, stop praying, and stop worshipping, we too become static allowing the “weeds” of the devil to take root. Eventually, we allow the devil to grow in us to the point that we too are dead—maybe not physically, but spiritually. In his letter to the Philippians, Paul encourages the people to continue to move forward, not to stop. Philippians 2:12-14 (NIV) “Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to His good purpose. Do everything without complaining or arguing…”. Our faith journey is a never-ending one that needs continual maintenance. Someone obviously gave up on this old car and discontinued all maintenance. We cannot let this happen to us. Associating with believers, attending small group sessions, performing acts of kindness, and striving to live a Godly life helps us to move forward, not become static or indifferent to God’s will. It helps us to live and to grow in faith. I Found Him…in an old deserted car.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - I Found Him-Dandelion</image:title>
<image:caption>The puff ball of a common dandelion consists of a large number of fruit called achenes. The disk-like extensions of the seed act like parachutes, allowing the wind to fly them up to five miles before landing. In this picture, a couple of seeds are breaking away from the puff ball, venturing out on their own. This image invokes several contrasting thoughts; one of which reminds me of the parable of the Lost Sheep. Matthew 18:12 (NIV) “…a man owns a hundred sheep and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off?” The “Lost Sheep” in this parable of Jesus refers to believers who have wandered away from God. Although only God knows what is in another’s heart, it is our responsibility to seek out, care for, and encourage those not following Christ. As we find these “seeds that fly away from the puff ball”, God uses us to invite, encourage, and guide them back into a relationship with Him. It is through their repentance and reconciliation with God that they can live for His Glory and reap the joy of God’s love. And also with you. As you feel yourself straying from God, seek help and comfort from Christians willing to wrap you in God’s love. Accept their invitations, change your direction, and say yes to God. I Found Him, as a couple of seeds left a dandelion puff ball.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - House in Ruins</image:title>
<image:caption>Ruins of an old farm house stand rotting at the edge of the field that undoubtedly generations of farmers once tended. What happened to this family or why this once thriving home was abandoned is unknown to me. Certainly many factors, both preventable and not, caused the demise of this house. The same can be said of people. Some seem to fall into the ruins of greed, jealousy, hate, and materialism. Paul explains inTitus1:10-11 (NIV) “For there are many rebellious people, mere talkers and deceivers, …. they are ruining whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach—and that for the sake of dishonest gain.” We all know people, preachers, politicians, and others who claim to be Christians, but whose actions shout a different story. They actually do harm in the name of Christianity. Paul warns these hypocrites in 1Timothy 1:4-7 “…These promote controversies rather than God’s work—which is by faith. The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscious and sincere faith. Some have wandered away from these and turned to meaningless talk. They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm”. False teachers and their followers are living on unsound foundations. Those who truly strive to know God, center their lives around Him, and work to please Him; prevail. I Found Him…in an old, abandoned farm house.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Thanksgiving</image:title>
<image:caption>Happy Thanksgiving! Today many take time to truly thank God for their food as well as their abundance of blessings; families, friends, community, church, and other God given gifts. Most reading this have comfortable homes, nice clothes, reliable cars, clean water and plenty of food. We often take these blessings for granted. We forget that many in our community do not share these same conveniences. We eat without thinking of the hungry. We turn on the heat without thinking of those with no heat or even homes. We complain about undergoing chemotherapy without thinking of those who have untreatable cancer. It is easy for us to forget how blessed we are, particularly on the 364 days of the year that are not Thanksgiving Day. Our challenge is to maintain an “Attitude of Gratitude” EVERYDAY and every waking hour. We are called to do so. Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians 5:18 “give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus”. Psalms 95:2 says: “Let us come before Him with thanksgiving, and extol Him with music and song”. Psalms 100:4 “Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and praise His name”. By constantly praising and thanking God, all day and every day, we become closer to Him. As we grow closer to God, He changes our perspective, changes our attitude, and fills us with joy. I Found Him …in a little girl’s smile.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - I Found Him...Antique Barn</image:title>
<image:caption>This 1920’s antique barn in eastern Beaufort County, NC still proudly stands and remains functional. Its wide planks, a rarity today, serve the building well just as it did almost one hundred years ago. The owner’s grandfather built the barn which now has been repurposed into a gift shop. In addition, the owner hand-makes absolutely beautiful wreaths from materials grown on the property; each one made to order by people who simply have heard about her and her products. Her success is not caused by a glitzy exterior in a mammoth shopping center, but instead by word-of-mouth proclaiming her beautiful work. Is this not similar to Jesus’ style of spreading the gospel? Even though He was God Himself walking the earth, He did not build ostentatious cathedrals for people to hear Him preach. He relied on word-of-mouth as He journeyed from town to town proclaiming the radical new thoughts that defined His ministry. He did not even ride into town on big beautiful horses, but instead on the backs of donkeys. He, just like His message, emphasized that it is not the exterior that matters, but what is on the inside, in one’s heart. Jesus says in Matthew 5:8 (NIV) “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God”. He calls us to “repurpose” our lives (just like this barn), change what is on the inside, and spread the word to all. I Found Him…in an unassuming antique barn.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - I Found Him...Pulley</image:title>
<image:caption>This old wooden pulley has been used by commercial fisherman for years to lighten the load in hauling in heavy nets filled with fish. Pulling the nets without the help of tools is virtually impossible. The pulleys make an overwhelming job manageable. We too face obstacles, hurdles, and seemingly overwhelming burdens in our lives. By ourselves, the tasks are simply too much to handle causing many to give up and wallow in defeat. There is help, however. There is a “pulley” to lighten the load. Jesus said in Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV) “Come to me all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your soul. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light”. The yoke to which Jesus refers is a tool, just like the pulley, that has two arches that is put over cattle so that they can pull a cart. With this tool, each cow pulls only one-half of the load. Jesus is willing and anxious to share your load. He is only a prayer away from helping, reducing the stress, and making the unmanageable doable. Jesus also works through others. Ask friends, pastors, fellow Christians for help. Offer yourself to others in the same way. Use the pulley and be the pulley for others. I Found Him…on an abandoned commercial fishing boat.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Crab in Crab Pot</image:title>
<image:caption>A blue crab, unexpectedly trapped and overlooked by the crabber, is bleached white by an unrelenting sun. Jesus talked often about the devil’s traps. In Luke 21:34, 36(NIV), for example, “Be careful or your hearts will be weighed down by dissipation, drunkenness, and the anxieties of life. And that day will close on you unexpectedly like a trap…”. Sin becomes easy with no remorse. Excuses and self-justification take the place of true mourning for sinning. Bam-trapped! We face enumerable traps designed to move us away from God. One such trap is money. Some people do almost anything to obtain it, and once they have it, feel so powerful and independent that they lose sight of God, falsely believing that they no longer need Him. Look at politians who vote against the best interests of their constituency; then follow the money. They are indeed TRAPPED. Paul instructs Timothy, a young minister, in 1 Timothy 6:9-10 (NIV): “People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil…”. He offers this alternative in verse 18: “Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous…”. Traps abound, but fortunately we have the broad shoulders of Jesus to steer us around them. I Found Him…spotting a bleached crab in a stack of crab pots.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - I Found Him...Lizard</image:title>
<image:caption>I Found Him-Lizard Shedding Skin Look closely to see a lizard naturally shedding his old skin as he continues to grow. What a powerful image this is as we consider our own lives and the beautiful gift of redemption that God gives us all. First, as we grow older, there is no need to grow old. Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 4:16 (NIV) “Therefore, do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day”. If we grow old, (instead of older) we lose the joy of our human potential. Finished. Sad shape. But if we see ourselves as wiser, kinder, more in control, still growing, then thank God that we are not the person that we used to be; and not the person we WILL be either. He allows us to “shed our old skin” and continue to grow. Second, no matter our past, no matter our age, through God’s gift, we can repent and be cleansed. Salvation is still available to all through faith. David in Psalms 51:1-2 (NIV) prays after committing adultery the following: “Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your unfailing love; according to Your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin”. “Shed your old skin”, be renewed. Start today, ask God for forgiveness, focus on pleasing Him, and experience His amazing grace. I Found Him…watching a lizard shed dead skin. </image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - I Found Him...Closed Country Store</image:title>
<image:caption>As thousands of others, a once vibrant store deteriorates, no longer viable. Why? A simple explanation is that they did not change with the times. For this store, there was not adequate parking, no gas was offered, and it was too small to offer a wide-enough variety of merchandise to meet the customers’ needs. Sadly, these stores are no longer relevant. They lost touch with the changing needs of their customers. Even more sad is that thousands of churches are falling into the same trap. They too are not changing. Their services, missions, classes, etc. are identical to those offered decades ago. Attendance is down and those still attending generally are grandparents. Too many young families do not view the church as important. Even young believers do not relate to most traditional churches. The church, to them, is a relic. God, however, is not a relic. He indeed is a living God who has endured forever. It is not that He is irrelevant, but churches fail to make Him real. Hebrews 4:12 (NIV) says: “For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edge sword…,”. Many churches, however, are not “living and active”; they are old and stale. Bold new Christian leadership (pastors and laity) is drastically needed or churches will soon follow the path of old country stores; and I for one am terrified of what will replace them. I Found Him…in an abandoned old country store.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Ocracoke Lighthouse</image:title>
<image:caption>Since 1823, the second oldest operating lighthouse in the United States, the Ocracoke Lighthouse, continues to shine its light into the sea helping ships safely navigate the tricky channels between the Pamlico Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. Commercial ships relied on the light from the octagonal lantern atop this 75 feet high structure to guide their path through treacherous waters. Just as it is the function of this historic lighthouse to cast a light for all to see, Jesus emphasizes that it is indeed our job as well to do the same. His instructions in Matthew 5:14-16 are clear: “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in Heaven”. So, are we shining boldly in our work for the Lord? Jesus does not ask us to hide in the shadows, but to stand tall like this lighthouse; to help others, to shout God’s praises, and to openly work to bring friends, family, colleagues, and strangers, to Him. The lyrics from a Hillsong Kids song says it well: “Let Your light shine and let Jesus shine through you”. <image:title>Blog - Tundra Swans</image:title>
<image:caption>Tundra Swans, flying in perfect formation, rely on each other to make their 4,000 mile semi-annual trip from Alaska/Canada to eastern North Carolina and back. Traveling in flocks, with family members together, they soar at 50 mph+ two miles high. They minimize their energy use by positioning themselves and coordinating their wing beats perfectly with the others. The Bible offers similar advice regarding working together. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (NIV) for example, says “Two are better than one, because they have good return for their work. If one falls down, his friend can help him up! Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” The point is that we are not alone. The Bible instructs family, friends or even strangers to help one another. Joining together to help is a trait that exists in humans just as it does with these swans. It sometimes gets lost in the nightly news, and we may have to be a little more intentional to make it a daily habit, but the instinct is there. Just as God extends His loving hands to help us, let us also extend our hands to others. Together we better serve and love the Lord; and together we can positively change our lives and the world. I Found Him… gazing at majestic swans soaring overhead.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog</image:title>
<image:caption>A centuries old oak tree stands tall, proclaiming its strength, withstanding all that time throws at it. Generations come and go, but this amazing tree remains solid through storms, droughts, and other disasters. What a beautiful sight it was for farm workers who took their breaks in the cool shade under its canopy. Oak trees are often used in the Bible to signify strength and stability. A great message is delivered in Isaiah 61, for example, when the servant proclaims that God is at work to restore and vindicate His people; that they would become strong and stable just like the oak tree. Isaiah 61:1-3 (NIV) “The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners…, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve … to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of His splendor”. Jesus taught from this scripture that we too can find comfort from our issues and can “stand tall as a mighty oak”, simply through faith in Him. I Found Him…under a massive oak tree.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - I Found Him...Abandoned House</image:title>
<image:caption>Oh what memories this house could share! The pig-pickings, Thanksgivings, Christmases, spring plantings and fall harvests, Sunday dinners; good times and bad; long hours farming and sweet Sunday rests all appear to fade away. This once stately farm house served proudly, but it cannot last forever. Time takes its toll. God’s love and grace, on the other hand, is timeless. In John 15:16, Jesus speaks to His disciples “You did not choose me, but I chose you to go and bear fruit – fruit that will last”. This fruit has indeed lasted, 2,000+ years and counting. Unlike man-made structures, this fruit lasts because it is from the Spirit of the living God. Paul explains in 2 Corinthians 3:3 “You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not in ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone, but on tablets of human hearts”. God’s grace continues to live in our hearts. So even as magnificent as this house once was, it lasts only a finite time. God’s grace, (an undeserved gift and unearned love of God through the Holy Spirit) was here before us; it is here through Jesus Christ to forgive our sins; and stays with us forever as we strive to further develop a relationship with Him. Lord, we thank you for your timeless grace, that as years defeat earthly objects, You remain strong; our rock, our hope. In Jesus name we pray. Amen</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - I Found Him...Great Egret</image:title>
<image:caption> On a cold wintry morning, shortly after sunrise, I was mesmerized by thousands of swans, geese, ducks, and other migratory wildlife wintering near a local lake. The sounds of thousands of birds honking seemed poetic. This Great Egret indeed was poetry in motion as it gracefully glided over the marsh. This picture sparks an overwhelming feeling of praise and astonishment due to the beauty of God’s creation. It mysteriously leads me to the glorious poetry in Psalms. Psalm 136: 1-2, 4--9 and 25-26 represents a liturgy of praise to the Lord as Creator. “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. His love endures forever. Give thanks to the God of Gods. His love endures forever. To Him who alone does great wonders, His love endures forever; who by His understanding made the heavens, His love endures forever; who spread out the earth upon the waters, His love endures forever; who made the great lights, His love endures forever; the sun to govern the day, His love endures forever; the moon and the stars to govern the night, His love endures forever…and who gives food to every creature, His love endures forever. Give thanks to the God of heaven. His love endures forever.” God is with us! His creation is bubbling over with wonder. Stop, take a deep breath, look and listen for the poetry that is God’s Creation. Thanks be to God. I Found Him…as a Great Egret slowly skimmed over pristine marshland.</image:caption>
