Blackwell-Carter-Midgette House-Hyde County

The Blackwell-Carter-Midgette House, located in Hyde County, is a distinguished example of Italianate architecture. Constructed in the late 1850's, David Carter Jr. commissioned the house for his daughter, Laura Elizabeth Carter (1838-1912), upon her marriage to Edward L. Blackwell (1830-1870). Master carpenter Cason Emery Swindell built the house.

This house boasts fully expressed Italianate style, featuring symmetrical, nearly square form, a low-pitched roof, an interior chimney, tall windows, and characteristic dropped pendant brackets.

The house is part of a 640-acre land patent originally granted to James Clayton in 1757.
